statement Ellen Papciak-Rose b. 1966 - Connecticut, USA
Ellen is an artist, graphic designer and illustrator originally from Connecticut, USA but had been residing in Southern Africa for the past 20 years. In 1989 she moved to Botswana as a US Peace Corps Volunteer teaching art in two rural villages. In 1995 she moved to Johannesburg, South Africa where she lived until Dec 2009.
In Jan 2010 Ellen moved back to the States and is working from her studio in Bethany, Ct.
Her design and illustration work is around community-based issues, cultural projects and the work of other artists. She has won two American Graphic Design Awards (GDUSA) and is widely published in design and illustration publications. Last year she was one of the creative speakers at AdobeLive in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
In 2007 Ellen had her first solo exhibition (in perspex, paint and print) at gordart Gallery in Johannesburg titled “Wild Life - An exhibition of asses and other animals” and showed “In Two Minds” (with Susan Jowell) at Kalk Bay Modern, in Cape Town. In 2006 she was awarded an Ampersand Foundation Fellowship (artist residency) in New York City and also started an on-going printmaking collaboration at David Krut Print Workshop in Johannesburg with printmaker Jillian Ross.
